Each year, the Health Education Network of Delaware recongizes individuals who have made significant contributions to HENOD or to the practice of health education in Delaware. The following awards were presented for 2005:.
President's Award — to Dr. Thomas Butler. Tom is past president of HENOD, and has servied on several committees including the Advocacy Committee. He had the difficult task of taking the helm from the organization's founders and moving it forward, which he did with great skill and integrity. He is a professor of health education at Delaware State University in Dover.
Advocacy Award — to Helene Gladney. Helene is health consultant to the mayor of Wilmington, and is a legislative analyst for the city council. She initiated and led the council's Health Marketing Committee, the Wilmington Health Planning Council and the Healthy Wilmington 2010 Initiative. City employees may find her leading the mayor's Healthy Lunch Walking Program. She has expanded her role by serving as an advisor for innumerable health activities throughout the state.
Achievement Award — to Betty Goodson Mitchell, founder of Kid Literature, Inc., and author of educational books for young people. She deals with sensitive health and social issues, and created the nationally distributed violence prevention video, "Violence-To-Go." The video received a resolution from the Wilmington City Council praising it for its "innovative and unique approach."
In addition, Linda Smith of the University of Delaware Employee Wellness Center, received a HENOD Letter of Recognition for her work with HENOD as treasurer, member of the conference planning committee, and her work with the HENOD newsletter. She also works to encourage school participation in the Lt. Governor's Challenge, and developed a special school packet for the Challenge.
Lifetime Achievement Award — to Dr. Robert Frelick. See separate article.
