The annual Health Education Network of Delaware (HENOD) awards were presented to health promotion leaders in Delaware at our annual conference on April 24 in Newark, Delaware.
Ferdinando A. "Fred" Gatto, director of the Tobacco Prevention and Control Program at the Delaware Division of Public Health, received the Contribution to Health Promotion Award. This award is presented each year to someone outside the profession who has made a major contribution to promoting positive health in our state. Mr. Gatto could not attend the meeting, but his award was forwarded to him by coworkers. Michael Peterson, Ed.D., president of HENOD, called Mr. Gatto an "unsung hero," who has been a strong and dedicated leader in the tobacco prevention and control efforts of the state.
The 2003 HENOD Advocacy Award was presented to Leonard Young, an outstanding advocate for the children of our state and, more recently, a strong advocate for the state's Clean Indoor Air Act and other tobacco prevention issues. Mr. Young is currently working as a grassroots organizer and advocate for Tobacco Free Delaware, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded program managed by the American Lung Association. As a child advocate with Stand for Children, Mr. Young worked tirelessly for improved health insurance coverage for the children of Delaware.
Christine Oakes, a health educator with the Delaware Division of Services for Aging and Adults with Physical Disabilities, received this year's HENOD Achievement Award. Chris has led efforts to promote physical activity among the aging and physically disabled populations, and was one of the leaders in development of the state's strategic plan for promotion of physical activity and healthy nutrition. A copy of the plan is available on this website. Chris is one of the co-founders of HENOD, and has been one of its most active members. With Marianne Carter, she was a cochair of this year's HENOD Conference.
Marianne Carter, M.S., R.D., received the 2003 President's Award. This award is given at the discretion of the HENOD president to the person who has contributed the most to the organization and/or its goals in the past year. Ms. Carter is director of the University of Delaware Wellness Center, writes a popular nutrition column for the Wilmington (DE) News Journal, and is vice president of HENOD. She was the conference co-chair this year; and devoted signficant time to enhancing the professional development of her peers through HENOD and other activities.
