Plus Strategies for the New Millennium

The second statewide conference of the Health Education Network of Delaware was held in Newark on April 9, 2001, with the theme, "Health Promotion in the New Millennium: Strategies for Successful Wellness Programs."

One of the highlights of the conference was the presentation of HENOD's first annual Health Promotion Awards – recognizing those who have made significant contributions to HENOD and to the health education field in Delaware. Each awardee received a commemorative plaque as part of their recognition.

The winners were:

  • Jane Maroney (left in photo montage above), former Delaware State legislator for twenty years, received the Outstanding Contribution to the Health Education Field Award, given to a non-HENOD member. Sen. Maroney has been a life-long advocate for health in Delaware and has authored numerous pieces of legislation in support of health and health promotion initiatives.
  • Chris Manning (center), of the American Heart Association, received the President's Award for outstanding service to the Health Education Network of Delaware. He has served as Membership Chair of the organization in 2000-01, leading to HENOD achieving a goal of 74 members in its first year as a membership organization, and more than 80 members in the current year.
  • Fred Breukelman (right), director of health education at the Delaware Division of Public Health and one of the founders of HENOD, received the Lifetime Achievement Award, given to a HENOD member. Mr. Breukelman was honored for his tireless efforts in support of public health education throughout Delaware.

The conference attracted about 120 health educators, nurses, and other health professionals and volunteers who are interested in promoting good health and the profession of health education. Keynote speaker Don Powell, founder and president of the American Institute for Preventive Medicine, provided practical tips on "Characteristics of a Successful Wellness Program." There were also sessions on reducing racial/ethnic disparities, nutrition, physical activity, the new state health plan Healthy Delaware 2010, corporate culture, stress management and social marketing.

Thanks to our co-sponsors – Corporate Health Services of Christiana Care Health System (CCHS) and Delaware Health and Social Services, Division of Public Health. Because of their contributions, the conference was able to present sessions about both worksite and community health promotion.

Thanks to the Mental Health Association of Delaware for sponsoring the session on stress management. And a very special thanks goes to conference coordinator Marian Hay, of CCHS, for her efforts in making this such a successful conference.
